Intensive In-Home Child & Family Services provides short-term, individualized support for children, youth and families experiencing more significant challenges that are affecting everyday family life.
This service uses a team-based approach involving a Registered Social Worker (RSW) and a Child and Youth Worker (CYW). Together, they work with the family to understand what is happening, identify the factors contributing to current challenges, and develop a plan that addresses the needs of both the child or youth and their caregivers.
Unlike traditional office-based services, much of the support takes place in the family home, where routines, relationships, transitions and challenging moments actually occur.
The Registered Social Worker (RSW) provides the clinical component of the service. The RSW works with the child or youth and caregivers to develop a deeper understanding of the concerns, family dynamics, strengths and needs. The RSW helps establish goals, guides the overall intervention plan, provides therapeutic support when appropriate, and works collaboratively with the CYW throughout the service.
The Child and Youth Worker (CYW) provides intensive, hands-on support in the home. The CYW works alongside children, youth and caregivers during everyday family life to observe patterns, model strategies, practise new skills and help families apply recommendations in real situations.
Rather than simply discussing what might work, families have an opportunity to try strategies with support right there in the moment.
Depending on the needs of the family, support may focus on:
This service is designed to provide more frequent and hands-on support than traditional weekly therapy or caregiver coaching.
Families may receive several hours of in-home support each week, with the frequency and duration determined by the family's individual needs and goals. Services are intended to be short-term and focused, with an emphasis on building skills and caregiver capacity that can continue after the intensive service ends.
Intensive In-Home Child & Family Services may be a good fit when a child or youth's emotional, behavioural or relational challenges are having a significant impact on everyday family life and weekly office-based support alone may not be enough to create change at home.
It may also be helpful when caregivers understand strategies in theory but need additional support applying them consistently during difficult moments.
The goal is not to replace the caregiver's role, but to work alongside the family, build confidence and skills, and help create practical changes that can be sustained in everyday life.
